ISTANBUL BIENNIAL JUST AROUND THE CORNER


Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation (İKSV) is ready to introduce the 17th Biennial through 17 September - 20 October 2022 with the support of Koç Holding as the sponsor of the Biennial until 2026. Biennial venues spread across the city from second-hand bookstores to public Turkish baths.

Istanbul Biennial starts on September 17 with the contribution of artists, philosophers, writers, poets, researchers and many other participants. Projects undertaken around parts of the world for more than two years are to be displayed for interaction in different districts of Istanbul throughout the Biennial. Events, interventions and unexpected encounters are parts of the exhibition.

The 17th Istanbul Biennial will extend from museums and traditional art venues in historical districts to various locations such as bookstores, second-hand bookshops, hospitals, cafes and Taksim metro station. Admission to the Biennial is free again this year.

Biennial’s Beyoğlu district venues are intriguing: Pera Museum that has already been hosting the Istanbul Biennial for many years, Performistanbul Live Art Research Space (PCSAA) integrating several performance artists, Central Rum High School for Girls being one of Istanbul’s historical Greek schools, SAHA Studio which provides artists and curators a space to interact and create make the top of this list.

Biennial venues in Kadıköy contain one of Istanbul’s industrial heritage of 130 years Gazhane Museum and Arthereistanbul founded at Yeldeğirmeni in 2014 by the artists who had to leave their hometown Syria. Fatih district will be hosting exhibition spaces for Biennial visitors for the first time this year. Calligrapher and cover expert Emin Barın’s studio Barın Han; one of Mimar Sinan’s major works The Çinili Hamam and Küçük Mustafa Paşa Bath that was built in 15th century are some of biennial venues in Fatih. Zeytinburnu Medical Plants Garden situated on 14.000 square meters is another location that hosts the Biennial.
