Magdalene University 26th RIBA Stirling Prize goes to Niall McLaughlin Architects design The New Library.
One of the most prestigious architecture awards, the RIBA Stirling Prize was announced on 13 October at RIBA’s London center. This year’s nominee projects consider the climate crisis, the reuse and upgrade of buildings and community values. Out of a six project shortlist, Niall McLaughlin Architects The New Library has won the prize
The exquisitely detailed new building provides students at the 700-year-old University of Cambridge college with a new library open 24 hours a day incorporating an archive and an art gallery. Set within the college grounds in Cambridge’s city-center, the new library replaces the cramped study spaces and extends the quadrangular arrangement of buildings and courts with sustainable design elements.
RIBA President Simon Allford, spoke on behalf of the 2022 RIBA Stirling Prize jury: "The structure has a long lasting, sophisticated and differential architecture. Creating a new building that will last at least 400 years is a significant challenge but one that Niall McLaughlin Architects has risen to with the utmost skill, care and responsibility.”
