TURKEY PAVILION PROJECT IS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 18TH VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE

“Ghost Stories: Carrier Bag Theory of Architecture” project curated by Sevince Bayrak and Oral Göktaş has been selected to exhibit at Venice Architecture Biennial Turkey Pavilion.

After an open call and a two-stage evaluation process, Ghost Stories: Carrier Bag Theory of Architecture was chosen to be exhibited at the Pavilion of Turkey at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. Out of the 24 projects the selection committee determined Ghost Stories: Carrier Bag Theory of Architecture, curated by Sevince Bayrak and Oral Göktaş to be exhibited from May 20 until November 26 2023 at Venice Architecture Biennale Turkey Pavilion.

The selection committee explained Ghost Stories: Carrier Bag of Architecture Project that brings a unique perspective to architectural and urban debates has been selected for “focusing on a current and important problem in Turkey as well as in the world, proposing a rich content and research method, and developing a field of interest ranging from building to urbanism with its cross-scale approach.”

Ghost Stories: Carrier Bag Theory of Architecture aims to question the taken-for-granted images and approaches to buildings and to reveal hopeful proposals for the future. Taking references from Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Carrier Bag Theory, the exhibition content, which also draws strength from the radical change that the world of architecture has undergone in the last two decades, will suggest listening to the stories of unused buildings rather than heroic structures standing on pedestals. A collective documentation of the contemporary archive of unused buildings that can be considered ‘the laboratory of the future’, found in almost every city in Turkey, will be the main topic at the exhibition. In addition, comprehensive research will suggest how we can transform them, instead of demolishing or leaving them to their fate.

Venice Architecture Biennale Turkey Pavilion exhibition is realized under the coordination of İstanbul Culture and Art Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and The Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
