Belgian architecture firm Van Laethem Architecten has created more than just a workspace—it has built a statement of commitment to sustainable architecture. This eco-conscious micro-office, constructed with renewable and bio-based materials, proves that even small-scale projects can have a profound impact on the future of sustainable design.
Nestled in the backyard of founder Chris Van Laethem’s home in Alken, Belgium, the office serves both as a functional workspace for the firm and as a living showcase of ecological design. By merging architecture, landscape, and infrastructure, the project challenges conventional construction techniques, embracing low-impact materials and energy-efficient solutions. The office’s primary building material is hempcrete, a natural and sustainable alternative to concrete, offering excellent thermal insulation and energy efficiency. The 40 cm thick hempcrete walls regulate indoor temperatures, minimizing energy consumption.
Externally, a combination of brick cladding at the base and cedar shingles above enhances both the aesthetic appeal and durability of the structure. Inside, the raw timber framework and exposed hempcrete walls create a warm yet minimalist atmosphere. According to Van Laethem Architecten, this office is not just about functionality—it is a model of how sustainable architecture can seamlessly integrate into everyday work environments.
The design minimizes reliance on complex technical systems. Instead of standalone energy solutions, the office taps into the adjacent residence’s existing infrastructure, utilizing rainwater recovery, solar-powered underfloor heating, and photovoltaic panels. Only a compact ventilation system and a small water heater were added, reinforcing a resource-conscious approach.
