The International Union of Architects (UIA) has announced the theme for World Architecture Day 2024 as "Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design."
Celebrated annually on the first Monday of October since 1985, in parallel with the United Nations (UN) World Habitat Day, World Architecture Day this year will focus on the role of young architects in urban planning and development. Through this theme, the UIA aims to encourage young architects to participate in inclusive processes, bringing forth new and creative perspectives essential for sustainable development.
In 2024, there will be a particular emphasis on enhancing the resilience of urban economies. The UIA will highlight the importance of energy efficiency, waste management, the use of sustainable materials, and sustainable mobility, exploring how cities can foster growth and recovery through innovative and sustainable practices. The active participation of young architects will be crucial in creating environmentally friendly cities.
The UIA supports young architects in involving communities in the design process and encouraging the appropriation and care of public spaces. Additionally, the UIA underscores the importance of addressing social justice, adaptive reuse of existing structures, and the adoption of circular economy principles by young architects. This approach will contribute to the construction of more sustainable and livable cities in the future.
As part of the World Architecture Day 2024 celebrations, successful projects led by young architects will be showcased. These projects will highlight examples of community transformation and improved urban living conditions. The UIA believes that by involving young minds, cities can harness innovative ideas to create sustainable and resilient urban environments.
