OSLO’S NEW NATIONAL MUSEUM OPENS

The opening date of the new Oslo National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Nasjonalmuseet, designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk has been announced. The New National Museum, which will be the largest art museum in the Scandinavian countries with an area of 54,600 square meters, is planned to be opened in Oslo on June 11, 2022.

The museum, which will gather the collections of the Old National Gallery, the Contemporary Art Museum and the Norwegian Decorative Arts and Design Museum under one roof; offers a brand new experience in terms of classical art, contemporary art, architecture and design.

Oslo’s historic Vestbanen Harbor, the most fascinating part of the museum is the large exhibition hall with a translucent façade above the building; The Light Hall. Sitting on two floors, The Light Hall will host large exhibitions of international importance with its 2,400 square meter area.

The design of the project, which was chosen in a competition 10 years ago, is in harmony with the texture of the city. Similar to the Oslo Opera House, a viewing terrace on the roof offers visitors the opportunity to watch the magnificent view of Akershus Castle, Rådhusplassen and the Oslo fjord. The museum square in front of the main entrance will be a meeting point with recreational areas, cafes, restaurants and events.

Edvard Munch’s famous paintings like The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894) can be seen in the new Oslo Nasjonalmuseet. The museum will be the largest in the Scandinavian countries.
