The new building of Istanbul Modern, Turkey's first modern and contemporary art museum, was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop + Arup and opened to visitors on Thursday, May 4, 2023. Situated in its original location on the Karaköy waterfront, the building is positioned at the confluence of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.
The new 10,500-square-meter Istanbul Modern is purpose-built to host a dynamic series of temporary exhibitions, interdisciplinary educational programs, film screenings, and an extensive art collection. Spanning from 1945 to the present day, the museum's collection includes works by international artists that reflect Turkey's artistic creativity.
ArchDaily's awards are presented in 15 categories and are determined by the platform's readers based on the qualities of the nominated projects and their impact on the communities in which they are situated. The cultural architecture category, which focuses on museums, arts, and cultural institutions worldwide, celebrates the most remarkable buildings constructed within the year.
