GRAND PALAIS REBORN FOR THE PARIS OLYMPICS

The 2024 Paris Olympics is set to once again draw the world's attention by highlighting the city's historical and cultural riches. For this grand event, one of Paris' iconic structures, the Grand Palais, has undergone an extensive restoration by Chatillon Architectes.

The restoration work, which began in 2021, has seen the completion of its first phase, allowing the Grand Palais to host events such as fencing and taekwondo during the Olympics.

Originally built for the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition, the Grand Palais has hosted numerous international exhibitions and events over the years. However, some sections of the building were closed to the public and fell into disrepair over time. Chatillon Architectes initiated the project to restore this historic building to public use. During the restoration, the original structure was preserved while adapting it to meet modern needs, creating a venue that retains its historical essence while accommodating contemporary events.

The restoration project reconnected the central axis of the Grand Palais and reopened areas previously closed to the public. The decorative balconies in the nave were strengthened and restored, increasing the building's capacity by 60%. Additionally, landscaping improvements were made to strengthen the connection with the Champs-Élysées, with 60,000 plants added to create green spaces. As a result, the Grand Palais is not just a venue for sports and events but also a cultural center integrated with nature.
