A CONTEMPORARY TAKE ON TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE: WESTMINSTER RESIDENCE

Designed by Batay-Csorba Architects, Westminster Residence is a striking reinterpretation of Edwardian gabled architecture, situated in Toronto’s vibrant High Park neighborhood.

Positioned on a corner lot, this residence offers a bright and spacious living experience under its steep terracotta roof, making the most of its compact footprint to create a sense of openness.

The structure comprises three distinct monolithic masses: a low brick-clad base, a heavy stone triangular roof, and high rectangular dormers. Together, these elements provide the building with both solidity and lightness.

Inside, the use of dark walnut, untreated travertine, and textured lime-washed walls creates a dramatic yet inviting atmosphere. These deep tones are balanced by expansive white oak floors and soft linen curtains, resulting in a warm and luminous interior.

The ground floor features a broad acid-treated concrete veranda extending into a serene private garden beneath a cantilevered roof. On the upper floor, the master bedroom opens onto a private balcony enclosed by a sunshade standing six meters high, evoking the intimacy of an urban courtyard.

Westminster Residence harmoniously blends traditional roof forms with contemporary design elements, standing as a testament to how the past and future can coalesce within Toronto's evolving urban fabric.
