DOMINO SQUARE: A LIVING URBAN SPACE

On the historic Brooklyn waterfront, the Domino Sugar Refinery’s post-industrial transformation is shaping the future of urban life. As part of this redevelopment, Domino Square emerges as a multi-layered fusion of architecture, landscape, and infrastructure, seamlessly blending the legacy of the past with the energy of contemporary urban living.

Situated in Williamsburg, Domino Square was envisioned as an extension of the 1882-built Domino Sugar Refinery, a structure now meticulously restored by PAU (Practice for Architecture and Urbanism). While the original brick façade has been preserved, the surrounding area has been reimagined with modern structures and an open public plaza, creating a space where history and contemporary design coexist. The architectural vision behind this transformation was shaped by Studio Cadena and Field Operations.

Occupying an entire city block, the square features tiered seating areas, green spaces at varying elevations, and ample room for outdoor activities. Concrete columns act as filters between commercial spaces and public areas, while the bowl-like topography fosters an inviting and immersive experience. The triangular roof structures, a signature element of Studio Cadena, were inspired by founder Benjamin Cadena’s childhood in the Andean mountains, adding a sense of warmth and familiarity to the urban landscape.

More than just an architectural landmark, Domino Square is designed as a vibrant social hub. It is set to host community events ranging from salsa nights and farmers’ markets to graduation ceremonies and a winter ice-skating rink. Hidden beneath the plaza is an innovative water filtration system, ensuring the project aligns with sustainable urban development goals.

As an extension of Domino Park, this new public space enhances Brooklyn’s riverfront accessibility, offering an unparalleled view of the Manhattan skyline. By preserving elements of industrial heritage while embracing contemporary urban design, Domino Square stands as a dynamic new chapter in Brooklyn’s architectural evolution, bridging the past and future in one cohesive urban space.
