THE FIRST STAGE OF BEŞIKTAŞ SQUARE PROJECT UNVEILED

The first phase of the two-stage Beşiktaş Square and Environmental Regulation project, initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 2021, has been completed and inaugurated. The square also features an eagle sculpture created by Prof. Bülent Çınar.

Over the years, Beşiktaş Square had lost its functionality due to factors such as urban infrastructure density, disorder, and the loss of green spaces. This necessitated a reorganization to strengthen Istanbul residents' connection with the sea and increase the proportion of green areas. In the initial phase of the project prepared by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), comprehensive transportation solutions were implemented to regulate the dense pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area between Beşiktaş Pier, known as Beşiktaş Square, and Beşiktaş Avenue.

A special eagle sculpture, designed by Prof. Bülent Çınar, the Head of the Sculpture Department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, was unveiled in the square upon the completion of the project's first phase, dedicated to the centenary of the Republic and the 120th anniversary of the Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club. The sculpture, symbolizing the dynamic essence of modern Turkey over the past century, emerged as a result of Prof. Bülent Çınar's 2.5 months of dedicated work. Approximately 400 meters of 316-grade stainless steel pipes, cut with laser technology, were assembled into 923 pipes through laser welding. With a total weight of 1400 kilograms, the sculpture was securely fixed to a 6000-kilogram raw granite rock, carefully selected from the same quarry as the granites covering the square.

Among the primary objectives of the Beşiktaş Square and Environmental Regulation project are the interconnected planning of squares, ensuring functional pedestrian circulation and pedestrian-vehicle relationships, preserving existing trees, integrating monumental structures into the square, achieving memorability, and implementing spatial arrangements that encourage socialization. Additionally, a priority of the project is to create a square around the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Tomb and Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Monument that emphasizes the element of art. The second phase of the project is currently underway.
