The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has commenced the first phase of a renewal project aimed at revitalizing the heavily trafficked Bağdat Avenue.
The project, spanning a total area of 32,000 square meters, includes wide sidewalks, improved pedestrian crossings, and modern urban furniture.
With the Kadıköy Bağdat Avenue Phase 1 Arrangement Project, the avenue will be rejuvenated with seating and resting areas, exhibition halls, and bike paths. The project aims to enhance the public quality of Bağdat Avenue.
Six primary goals have been set for the avenue: widening sidewalks, eliminating elevation differences, facilitating pedestrian crossings, preserving and reorganizing cultural values on the avenue, introducing new art focal points, and recording and making intangible cultural heritage accessible.
Arif Gürkan Alpay, Deputy Secretary General of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, commented on the project, stating, “Bağdat Avenue will become the face of modern Istanbul. We are starting the construction of the first 1,000-meter phase of the project, which includes a new bike path, wider sidewalks, improved pedestrian crossings, and modern urban furniture. While preserving the existing green fabric, we are also adding new green areas. Additionally, we are completely renewing the avenue’s infrastructure.”
