Renovated Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM), built in Istanbul Taksim, reunited with art lovers on the 98th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic. The building, whose foundation was laid on February 10, 2019, was opened with a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Atatürk Cultural Center, which has left a significant mark on not only İstanbul’s but also Turkey’s recollection of arts and culture, opened its gates to the lovers of art on October 29, 2021, in its renewed building which reminisces the visitors of its former architecture. After 13 years, the first concert was held at AKM at the opening with Sinan Opera. The New AKM is designed by Murat Tabanlıoğlu, the son of the original building’s architect, Hayati Tabanlıoğlu.
The silhouette and the prominent characteristics of the old building have been preserved in the New Atatürk Cultural Center, which was completed in 2.5 years. Consisting of 5 blocks, the building has a closed area of 95 thousand square meters. It includes an opera hall with a capacity of 2,400, a theater with a capacity of 802, a gallery, a multi-purpose hall, a children’s art center, a music platform, a recording studio, a 2-story library, Yeşilçam Cinema, and a design shop.
The most talked-about and symbolic element of AKM is the giant sphere covered with specially designed 3D ceramic tiles facing Taksim Square. Under this giant sphere, there is an opera hall with a capacity of 2 thousand 40 people. Each of the 15,000 ceramics covering the sphere was handcrafted. The opera hall was built in the shape of a horseshoe to achieve the best natural acoustics, after detailed technical and architectural analysis. The hall, which has the sound quality and reverberation time that will reach the standards of the best opera houses worldwide, has an orchestra capacity of 118 people. All architectural elements of the hall were designed following acoustic needs, such as the wood flooring to avoid sound-absorbing textile products. Istanbul AKM opens its gates to joint and foreign productions in addition to the events organized by its established institutions. The new AKM is ready to host valuable artists and communities from Turkey and abroad with its halls and show grounds of impeccable acoustics.
