A Mixed-Use Project Sensitive to the Surrounding Fabric in Vienna
The design of Straussengasse 14, created by the Feld72 architecture office, adds a modern interpretation to the traditional neighborhood fabric of Vienna. This mixed-use building is designed in harmony with the city's historical structures while also responding to the dynamic needs of contemporary living.
The project incorporates a six-meter-high half-timbered building known to have been constructed in 1907, which features remarkable architecture. This historic structure becomes the focal point of the new design, while the entrance door and the setback of the upper floor enhance the visibility of the original building from the street. The entire structure is designed to include 13 apartments, two retail spaces on the ground floor, and two office units.
The design of Straussengasse 14 achieves visual and physical harmony with the surrounding traditional buildings while using a modern architectural language. The light-toned surfaces and simple details used on the facades lend a sense of lightness to the structure, while large window openings bring plenty of natural light into the interiors. This way, the building offers its residents spacious and comfortable living areas.
Inside the building, a flexible and multifunctional layout stands out. In particular, the residential units are designed to cater to different user profiles. Spacious balconies and an inner courtyard create breathing spaces that connect with nature in the city.
Straussengasse 14 stands out as a structure that links the past and the future in Vienna's transforming neighborhoods, emphasizing a human-centered way of living. This project by Feld72 also demonstrates that architecture can be not only a means of shelter but also a tool for community building.
