A SMALL OFFICE WITH A BIG IMPACT FROM VAN LAETHEM ARCHITECTS

The Belgian architecture firm Van Laethem Architecten has signed off on a unique project that delivers a strong message about sustainable architecture. This small-scale office, which uses renewable and environmentally friendly materials and emphasizes natural construction techniques, is highly effective in terms of sustainability.

Located in the backyard of the studio founder Chris Van Laethem's home in the city of Alken, Belgium, this small office serves as both a workspace and a showcase reflecting the studio's commitment to ecological architecture. This structure, where architecture, landscape, and infrastructure intertwine, was built with materials and techniques that push the boundaries of sustainable design. The primary building material for the office is lime-hemp blocks, which offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional concrete. The lime-hemp walls, approximately 40 cm thick, naturally meet the building's insulation needs, enhancing energy efficiency.

On the exterior, a brick ground layer and cedar wood cladding rising above it provide both an aesthetic and protective layer to the structure. Inside, the raw wooden supporting system integrates with the natural lime-hemp walls to create a warm and minimalist atmosphere. Van Laethem Architecten emphasizes that this design is not just a functional office space but also serves as an inspiring example of sustainable architecture.

The office aims to achieve maximum efficiency with minimal technical infrastructure. To reduce the building's energy needs, rainwater recovery, solar underfloor heating, and photovoltaic panels were integrated with the existing systems of the nearby main residence. Only minimal additional technical systems—a small ventilation unit and a mini water heater—were added. This approach presents a model for reducing energy consumption by efficiently using natural resources.

Van Laethem Architecten's project brings a new perspective to the modern office concept with eco-friendly materials, minimal energy use, and natural construction techniques. Unlike traditional concrete structures, this office successfully creates a space that is in harmony with nature, showcasing how sustainable design can become more prevalent in the future.
