UIA Announces the Theme for World Architecture Day 2024
The International Union of Architects (UIA) announced the theme for the 2024 World Architecture Day as "Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design."
World Architecture Day, celebrated every year on the first Monday of October in parallel with the United Nations (UN) World Habitat Day since 1985, will focus this year on the role of young architects in urban planning and development. The UIA aims to encourage young architects to present new and creative perspectives for sustainable development by participating in these processes.
In 2024, particular emphasis will be placed on increasing the resilience of urban economies. The UIA will address the importance of topics such as energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable material use, and sustainable mobility, discussing how cities can grow and improve through innovative and sustainable practices. The active participation of young architects in these processes will play a critical role in creating eco-friendly cities.
The UIA supports young architects in involving communities in the design process and encouraging the ownership of public spaces. At the same time, it emphasizes that issues such as advocating for social justice, reusing existing structures, and adopting circular economy principles should also be addressed by young architects. This approach will contribute to building more sustainable and livable cities in the future.
As part of the 2024 World Architecture Day celebrations, successful projects led by young architects will be showcased. These projects will stand out as examples that transform communities and improve urban living conditions. The UIA believes that with the participation of young minds, cities can implement innovative ideas for sustainable and resilient urban environments.
