NOTRE-DAME CATHEDRAL IS COMING BACK TO LIFE AFTER THE FIRE 5 YEARS AGO
Notre-Dame Cathedral, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is reopening its doors exactly five years after the fire on April 15, 2019. This important masterpiece of Gothic art will begin welcoming visitors again on December 8, 2024, following meticulous restoration efforts.
Restoring the areas destroyed by the fire aimed to preserve the architectural features and spiritual value of the cathedral. The reopening celebrations of the cathedral took place on December 7, 2024, under the leadership of Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich and with the participation of the President of France. This special ceremony brought together important guests, such as representatives from all congregations in Paris, cathedral members, and Parisian clergy. The ceremony continued until midnight and transformed into a grand celebration with the participation of larger crowds on December 8.
The restoration of Notre-Dame enabled the revival of traditional French craft techniques following the destruction caused by the fire. The work of master craftsmen, such as roofers and decorative artists added to UNESCO's Intangible Heritage List, formed the key point of the restoration. Thus, the connection between intangible heritage and tangible heritage has been highlighted once again.
As part of the restoration completed with the renovation of the tower in 2023, the statue of the Virgin Mary and Child, known as "Our Lady of Paris," will return to its place in the cathedral on November 15, 2024.
After five years of detailed restoration, Notre-Dame has regained its significance in the "Paris, Banks of the Seine" World Heritage Site. The success of the restoration draws attention as an example of a global collective effort recognized by UNESCO and underscores the historical, cultural, and spiritual importance of the cathedral once again.
In the cathedral that has been opened for visits; between December 8 and December 15, entry to the morning services at 10:30 will be by invitation, while the evening services at 18:30 will be open to everyone.
