MELEK ZEYNEP BULUT won the PUBLIC AWARD at the London Design Biennale with "OPEN WORK"!

Between June 1-25, Turkey was represented at the London Design Biennale held at Somerset House by Melek Zeynep Bulut’s performative, experimental spatial installation titled “Open Work.” Based on the concepts of door, passage, and threshold, “Open Work” was selected from among 47 countries and various universities and won the Public Award.

The fourth edition of the London Design Biennale, which approaches design beyond borders, explores new forms of international collaboration, and encourages participation through multidisciplinary design, took place under the theme “The Global Game: Re-mapping Collaborations.” The installation "Open Work" by Turkish designer Melek Zeynep Bulut, symbolizing an ironic monument, was chosen first by public vote among works by more than 40 artists and won the Public Award. The "Public Award" is determined by visitors’ votes and helps highlight projects that will shape the future of the design world.

“Open Work,” a performative space and theatrical series of transitions shaped around the metaphors of threshold and transformation, is based on discussing the meanings of concepts that have represented power, boundary-setting, and social hierarchy throughout human history. Abstract doors and circulation plans made of moving and sound-producing surfaces functioning like an instrument interact with visitors, turning them into part of the installation. Offering an extraordinary experience through perception and matter, the installation stands out with its monumental arrangement and scale; as visitors touch this experimental space, inviolability gives way to silence and flexibility.

Melek Zeynep Bulut, who defines her work as a synthesis of architecture, sculpture, psychology, and behavioral sciences, incorporates abstract and concrete experiences, sculpture-space, and space-instinctual experience analyses in her works. The artist continues her multidisciplinary studio practice in Istanbul and Paris.
