ISTANBUL MODERN WINS "BUILDING OF THE YEAR" AWARD
Istanbul Modern has won the "Building of the Year" award in the cultural architecture category from the prestigious architecture platform ArchDaily.
The new museum building, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, has received another internationally recognized award after being selected for Architectural Digest's "Wonders of 2024" list and ranking in National Geographic's "Best of the World."
The Building of the Year Awards, chosen by readers of ArchDaily, one of the world's leading architecture platforms, were held for the fifteenth time this year. As a result of the voting, in which fifteen projects from around the world were deemed worthy of the award, Istanbul Modern's new building was also the winner in the "Cultural Structure" category.
The new building of Istanbul Modern, Turkey's first modern and contemporary art museum, was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop + Arup and opened to visitors on Thursday, May 4, 2023. The structure, located at its original site on the Karaköy waterfront, is situated at the point where the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn meet.
The new Istanbul Modern, covering 10,500 square meters, was purpose-built for a dynamic series of temporary exhibitions, interdisciplinary educational programs, film screenings, and a wide-ranging art collection. The museum's collection spans the period from 1945 to the present and includes works by international artists that reflect Turkey's artistic creativity.
The awards given by ArchDaily in 15 categories are determined by the platform's readers based on the qualities of the nominated projects and how they benefit the community in their location. The cultural architecture category, which focuses on museums and cultural-art institutions worldwide, features the most remarkable buildings constructed that year.
