HARUDOT: A UNIQUE CAFE THAT INTEGRATES NATURE INTO DESIGN
Bangkok-based IDIN Architects cleverly blends architecture, nature, and culture with the Harudot Cafe project designed in the coastal town of Chonburi, Thailand.
Harudot Cafe brings together Thailand's specialty coffee brand Nana Coffee Roasters and an exotic plant enthusiast property owner in a unique project. The design and atmosphere of the cafe emerged from the fusion of these two concepts. At the most striking point of the design, there are two massive baobab trees.
The name of the cafe is formed by combining the Japanese word “haru,” meaning "spring," and the English word “dot,” meaning "point." The “haru,” symbolizing new beginnings and growth, combines with “dot” to express a starting point.
Designed by IDIN Architects, Harudot Cafe has been realized as a destination cafe where nature and architecture meet. The project features baobab trees as well as an olive tree to emphasize new beginnings and growth.
Baobab trees form the focal point of the two semi-open courtyards. Here, the triangular roof of the architecture is separated to allow the trees to grow. These voids create curved forms that contribute to the dynamic nature of the architecture.
It also allows rain and sunlight to enter the courtyard, ensuring the connection with nature is preserved.
The design of the cafe embodies a simplicity and attention to detail inspired by Japanese culture. The black triangular forms of the architecture contrast with the natural and warm interior pine walls.
Guests enter the cafe through one of the triangular forms, discovering a bright and enjoyable space that transforms and curves from start to finish. The division of the building into smaller masses on a human scale allows for the creation of different areas. The bar, coffee drinking area, lounge, meeting room, and restrooms can be counted among these.
The graphic elements within Harudot further strengthen its unique character. Specially designed typography and signage inspired by the spring season add a cheerful touch to the environment. The terrazzo floor, with circular separations and embedded quotes, guides visitors to different areas of the cafe, while petal patterns spread outward, creating a playful connection with the outside world.
IDIN Architects seems to have succeeded in bringing the philosophy of integrating nature into design to life in the design of Harudot Cafe.
