GRAND PALAIS, REBORN FOR THE PARIS OLYMPICS
The 2024 Paris Olympics is preparing to draw the world's attention once again by highlighting the city's historical and cultural riches. For this major event, the Grand Palais, one of Paris's iconic structures, has undergone a comprehensive restoration by Chatillon Architectes.
Restoration work began in 2021, and the first phase was completed. This allows the Grand Palais to host events such as fencing and taekwondo during the Olympics.
Since it was built for the 1900 Paris International Exhibition, the Grand Palais has hosted many international exhibitions and events. However, over time, some parts of the building were closed to the public and fell into disrepair. Chatillon Architectes implemented the project to restore this historic building for public use. During the restoration, the original structure of the building was preserved while adapting it to modern needs. This way, the building was redesigned as a venue suitable for contemporary events while maintaining its historical texture.
As part of the restoration project, the central axis of the Grand Palais was reconnected, and areas that were previously closed to the public were reopened. The decorative balconies located in the oil were reinforced and restored, increasing the building's capacity by 60%. Additionally, landscaping was done to strengthen the connection with the Champs-Élysées, and 60,000 plants were planted to create green spaces. Thus, the Grand Palais has been transformed into not only a sports and event venue but also a cultural center integrated with nature.
