A MODERN TOUCH TO TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE: WESTMINSTER RESIDENCE
Designed by Batay-Csorba Architects, Westminster Residence is a striking residential project that reinterprets traditional Edwardian roof forms with a modern understanding, located in Toronto's High Park area.
Situated on a corner lot, this residence offers wide and bright interiors under a steep terracotta roof, creating a spacious living area despite its compact footprint.
Westminster Residence consists of three main monolithic masses: a low brick-clad ground floor, a heavy stone-clad triangular roof, and tall rectangular roof windows. The combination of these masses gives the structure both a sense of solidity and spaciousness.
Inside, a dramatic and inviting atmosphere is created using dark walnut wood, unfilled travertine, and textured lime-washed walls. These dark tones are balanced with wide white oak floors and soft linen curtains, providing a warm and bright equilibrium in the space.
On the ground floor, a spacious veranda covered with acid-treated concrete extends towards the side garden under a heavy cantilevered roof, providing access to a calm, private garden. Upstairs, the master bedroom expands within a tall roof window, opening onto a private balcony located behind a 6-meter-high sunshade. This design creates a courtyard feel within the city.
Westminster Residence stands out as a structure that skillfully combines the past and the future within Toronto's evolving urban fabric by blending traditional roof forms with modern design elements.
