Calder Gardens, Philadelphia. A new culture – nature space

Calder Gardens, located on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, is a new cultural venue dedicated to the art of one of the 20th century's most important sculptors, Alexander Calder. Opened in September 2025, this venue aims to provide a unique experience that integrates art, architecture, and nature.

Architecture and Landscape

The architectural design of Calder Gardens was created by the renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. The landscape design of the gardens belongs to the world-famous Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf. Built on an area of approximately 1.8 acres, the structure reflects Calder's artistic approach with galleries, outdoor installation spaces, transitional gardens, and various lighting arrangements.

Presentation of Art

The museum offers a wide selection of mobile and stabile sculptures, paintings, and drawings from different periods of the artist's career. The collection is designed to be open to periodic changes as well as fixed exhibitions, allowing visitors to encounter different works with each visit. The gardens and interiors create a unique atmosphere by integrating Calder's art with the cycle of nature.

Cultural Location

Calder Gardens is situated in the cultural axis of Philadelphia, where the Barnes Foundation and the Rodin Museum are located. These three institutions make the city one of the important centers of art. Calder Gardens also collaborates operationally with the Barnes Foundation to organize educational programs and cultural events.

Visitor Experience

The space offers not only an exhibition venue but also a multi-sensory experience for art lovers. The diversity of plants, natural landscape elements, underground galleries, and light plays provide visitors with a poetic experience beyond an ordinary museum visit.
