ENCHANTING MUSEUM: THE FREEDOM MUSEUM
The Freedom Museum in Groesbeek, Netherlands, has the shape of a massive parachute. It perfectly carries the signature of Royal HaskoningDHV, Polyned, and ZJA, as well as the full richness of the “Shaded Dome” technology.
The Freedom Museum stands out with its huge parachute shape, an important symbol marking the end of the war of independence. Although the museum first shines with its “Shaded Dome” roof, its fluid form and facade look out over the magnificent greenery of Groesbeek’s hilly landscape, revealing its true character here. Because this is a building designed with sustainability from every angle, providing an optimal climate even in the most challenging weather conditions. Additionally, the “Shaded Dome” technology makes all the materials used more efficient.
The museum’s restaurant overlooks the breathtaking valley where the Allied forces advanced toward Germany during World War II. The gently sloping dome is positioned behind the flat hill for those viewing from the road. This creates a large green space between the Canadian Military Cemetery for outdoor events. The museum’s flowing shape and surprising facade blend into the winding, hilly terrain, strangely hiding itself while recalling the war of independence.
Museum director Wiel Lenders states, “We are very proud not only of the museum’s innovative and extraordinary architecture but also of its content. It tells a story of war and peace beyond boundaries and from multiple perspectives for both young people and adults, connecting with events of the 20th century and today.”
Thanks to its parachute-like roof supported by airflow, this 2400-square-meter museum requires no columns; the space can be divided as desired. Also, the rooms, café, and exhibition areas in the museum can be reconfigured without high costs. We hope you can visit at the earliest opportunity!
