BEŞİKTAŞ MEYDANI PROJESİNİN İLK ETABI AÇILDI

The First Phase of the Beşiktaş Square Project Has Opened

The first phase of the two-stage Beşiktaş Square and Surrounding Area Arrangement project, initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 2021, has been completed and opened for service. The square also features an eagle statue designed by Prof. Bülent Çınar.

Over the years, due to urban fixture density, disorder, and loss of green spaces, Beşiktaş Square lost its functionality. There was a need to redesign it to strengthen the relationship between the people of Istanbul and the sea and to increase the amount of green space. In the first phase of the project prepared by the IMM, comprehensive transportation solutions were implemented to regulate the heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the area known as Beşiktaş Square, between the Beşiktaş Pier and Beşiktaş Street.

A special eagle statue, designed by Prof. Bülent Çınar, Head of the Sculpture Department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, in honor of the 100th anniversary of our Republic and the 120th anniversary of Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club, took its place in the square with the completion of the first phase of the project. The statue symbolizes the dynamic structure of 100 years of modern Turkey and was created after 2.5 months of work by Prof. Bülent Çınar. Approximately 400 meters of 316-grade stainless steel pipes were cut using laser cutting technology, then 923 pipes were assembled with laser welding. The statue, weighing a total of 1400 kilograms, was fixed to a 6000-kilogram raw granite rock selected from the same quarry as the granite covering the square.

The main goals of the Beşiktaş Square and Surrounding Area Arrangement project include planning squares in relation to each other, ensuring functional pedestrian circulation and pedestrian-vehicle interaction, protecting existing trees, integrating monumental structures with the square, ensuring memorability, and spatial arrangements that encourage socialization. Additionally, creating a square emphasizing the artistic element around the Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha Tomb and Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha Monument is among the project's priorities. The second phase of the project is still ongoing.
