Sustainable Transformation Project by BENTHEM CROUWEL ARCHITECTS
The old business center area District West in Amsterdam Sloterdijk is undergoing an urban transformation process. The planning of this comprehensive renewal project has been undertaken by Benthem Crouwel Architects.
The ambitious transformation project includes the sustainability-focused renovation of over 100,000 square meters of office and similar spaces. The first phase of the project, the 15,700 square meter DW02 Lighthouse office tower, was recently completed.
The building's facade uses a functional grid that is compatible with the industrial aesthetic of District West, featuring stepped terraces among the facade elements. The new extension, made entirely of wood, emphasizes the theme of sustainability. Large facade openings provide ample daylight to the interior. Warm and inviting interiors are created with wooden materials.
The new main entrance opens into a spacious atrium featuring a sculptural staircase that provides access to the upper floors. Thanks to the transparency created by the open spaces, the interior and exterior are visually connected. Thus, the design promotes interaction and dynamism.
Wooden materials have been selected in line with the project's themes of durability and sustainability, significantly reducing the building's ecological footprint. Other sustainable features include a fully disassemblable and reusable building system, stone floors instead of cement screed, and a WKO system to minimize energy consumption. Additionally, extensive green areas have been created on the roof, terrace, and surrounding areas to enhance biodiversity, user well-being, and climate resilience.
This innovative wooden structure stands out as a reflection of Benthem Crouwel Architects' vision that combines sustainability and modern architecture. The project contributes to Amsterdam's dynamic urban transformation with its eco-friendly features and aesthetic value.
