2023 VENEDİK MİMARLIK BİENALİ’NİN TEMASI: GELECEĞİN LABORATUVARI

THE THEME OF THE 2023 VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE: THE LABORATORY OF THE FUTURE

The theme of the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale, which will take place from May 20 to November 26, has been determined as The Laboratory of the Future.

The curator of the Biennale is Lesley Lokko.

Venice Biennale President Roberto Cicutto and Biennale Curator Lesley Lokko announced the title and theme of the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale, which will be held at Giardini, Arsenale, and various locations in Venice from May 20 to November 26.

Lesley Lokko explains the theme as follows: “New technologies constantly emerge and disappear, giving us unfiltered snapshots of life in parts of the world we will probably never visit or understand. However, to see both the near and the far at the same time, as Du Bois and Fanon pointed out, is only possible there! Not in the so-called developing, third, and Arab worlds! We talk about minorities and differences in Europe, but the truth is that minorities in the West are the majority globally, and diversity is our norm. There is only one place on this planet where all these questions of equality, race, hope, and fear converge and integrate at a single point: Africa. Anthropologically, we are all African, and whatever happens in Africa happens to all of us.”

And Lokko continues: “We are designing our exhibition as a guiding workshop and laboratory for architects and practitioners in various creative disciplines, encouraging them to imagine what the future might hold for their target audiences, whether participants or visitors, based on their own contemporary practices.”

Roberto Cicutto says, “Lesley Lokko shows determination and courage in using two words that have become outdated but irreplaceable in the exhibition title – ‘laboratory and future’ – to restore their full significance,” adding: “You will realize how much her approach resembles a proposal for an agreement among architecture, the cultural world, and Biennale visitors in general. This exhibition is based on very practical proposals and specific perspectives, looking directly into the eyes of representatives of participating countries and everyone filling Giardini, Arsenale, and the city of Venice. This is the real reason a curator takes on the responsibility of organizing the International Biennale Exhibition: to speak to the whole world!”

The Venice Architecture Biennale is the 18th International Architecture Exhibition. It also includes a selection of side events organized by international institutions that will hold their own shows and initiatives in Venice. This is an exciting step for the whole world and, of course, a perfect reason to visit Giardini, Arsenale, or Venice!
