2022 RIBA Stirling Prize Announced

The Magdalene University won the 26th RIBA Stirling Prize with the New Library designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects.

The RIBA Stirling Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the architecture sector, was announced on October 13 at RIBA's headquarters in London. This year, the shortlisted projects highlighted issues such as the climate crisis, reuse and adaptation of existing buildings, and community value. Among the 6 finalists, the New Library designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects was the winner of the award.

The award-winning work offers students at the 700-year-old Cambridge University college a new library open 24 hours a day, including an archive and art gallery. Niall McLaughlin Architects combines load-bearing brick, triangular pitched roofs, carved windows, and sustainable design elements to create a building that will withstand time on the college grounds in the center of Cambridge.

RIBA President Simon Allford, speaking on behalf of the 2022 RIBA Stirling Prize jury, said: "The building has a sophisticated and generous architectural understanding designed to last a long time. Creating a new building that will last at least 400 years is difficult. However, Niall McLaughlin Architects has met this challenge with top-level skill, care, and responsibility."
