The Theme of World Architecture Day 2021 Has Been Announced
World Architecture Day, determined by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1985, is celebrated every year on the first Monday of October, parallel to the UN World Habitat Day.
This important day, which emerged to draw attention to the role of architecture in human life and the future, organizes activities and events around a different theme each year. The theme for World Architecture Day celebrated on October 4, 2021, was announced as “Clean environment for a healthy world.”
This year, both World Architecture Day and UN World Habitat Day (UN-HABITAT World Habitat Day) have chosen themes focusing on the climate crisis and a clean environment. The theme for this year’s UN Habitat Day is “Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world.”
The themes of World Architecture Day and UN Habitat Day aim not only to discuss the future impact of current issues but also to develop approaches for solutions.
UIA focuses on the theme “clean environment for a healthy world” in three main areas: Housing, public spaces, and their relationship with climate change… It hopes that architects worldwide will concentrate on these three topics to contribute to the 2030 Global Development Plan.
UIA states that all people should have the right to adequate housing. The current situation is far from this goal… According to the UN Habitat Program, more than 1.8 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing.
Research predicts that by 2030, 40% of the world’s population will need access to housing, which is a prerequisite for education, employment, health, and social services.
The ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have caused significant changes in how we view public environments, buildings, and open spaces. The experiences from the pandemic have accelerated the shaping of future public spaces.
Cities at the forefront of the health crisis and efforts to respond to the pandemic have prepared to rebuild public spaces sustainably and resiliently.
The United Nations Environment Program states that cities are responsible for 75% of global CO2 emissions. Transportation and construction hold the largest share of this amount. The theme of UN Habitat Day also focuses on reducing carbon emissions in cities.
Architects have the capacity to respond to these complex challenges arising from urban construction. The UIA SDG Commission aims to bridge the practices of architects worldwide with UN initiatives. It argues that architects should not only be sensitive to the new Sustainable Development Plan but also actively participate in its implementation and development.
